How to Wash Napkins, Store & Keep them Looking New

Whether you’re setting the table for a simple dinner or a colorful party, cloth napkins bring a touch of charm and polish. But keeping them fresh, soft, and stain-free? That’s where the real magic happens.

At ANNOVA, we believe in making everyday moments beautiful and sustainable—and that includes reusable napkins. Here's a guide to care for them the right way.

Pre-Treat Stains ASAP

Napkins do the messy work. Don't wait to treat spots:

  • Food & Drink Stains (Tomato, Berries, Wine): Soak in cold water with a splash of white vinegar or gentle detergent. Do this as soon as possible, as time can be a variable.

  • Grease Stains: Sprinkle with baking soda or cornstarch and let sit for 15–20 minutes before washing.

  • Marker/Crayon: Dab the spots with rubbing alcohol before a cold water soak.

Tip: Always test stain removers on a small hidden area first, before applying it everywhere.

Wash With Care

Your washing method matters depending on the napkin material:

For Cotton or Linen Napkins:

  • Set the machine to wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle.

  • Use mild detergent (no bleach, as it weakens fibers over time).

  • Wash light and dark colors separately.

For Decorative or Embroidered Napkins:

  • Hand wash or use a mesh laundry bag on delicate.

  • Avoid wringing, instead gently press out excess water.

Bonus Tip: Add a cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle to soften napkins naturally.

Dry & Press for a Crisp Finish

  • Air Dry: Hang or lay flat to dry to avoid shrinkage.

  • Machine Dry: Tumble dry on low if the label allows, then remove while slightly damp to reduce wrinkles.

  • Ironing: For that hotel-worthy finish, iron while still slightly damp using the fabric setting.

Optional: Spray small amounts of lavender water for a fresh scent.

Store to Keep Them Neatly

Fold napkins neatly and store them:

  • In a linen drawer with sachets or cedar blocks for freshness.

  • Stacked flat or rolled in a napkin basket for quick and easy access.

  • Use dividers or organizers if you have multiple colors or seasonal styles.

If you host often, pre-fold and stack by style for quick setup.

💡 Napkin Care Extras

  • Rotate Sets: If you use cloth napkins daily, having 2 to 3 napkin sets allows even wear.

  • Match With Flatware: Keep your favorite napkin colors near your curated flatware for easy styling.

  • Travel Tip: Cloth napkins are great for picnics and eco-friendly lunches. Just pack a wet bag for used ones.

Cloth napkins are more than just a functional item, they're a part of your home’s personality. A little extra care goes a long way in making them last for years of memories, meals, and messy moments.
